The next expansion for Fantasy Flight’s Eldritch Horror is to be based on Chaosium’s classic Call of Cthulhu campaign ‘Masks of Nyarlathotep’, marking a crossover between the worlds of tabletop RPGs and board games.
The expansion will see investigators attempt to thwart the rise of an otherworldly Ancient One. Strange cults are gathering strength in remote corners and bustling cities all over the world, and though the cults seem to worship different gods there is one thread that runs throughout all their evil rites: Nyarlathotep.
One of the changes introduced in the expansion come in the form of ‘Personal Stories’ – the scars each investigator bears from their own unique brushes with the otherworldly. Pursuing an investigator’s Personal Story allows a player to gain insight into each character’s background, gain unique rewards, and stave off terrible consequences, but they must take care to weigh the time and effort needed to complete it while the world remains in danger.
The first edition of the globe-trotting Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign came to print more than 20 years ago, and a newly expanded version is set to be released for Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition. Chaosium promises that the new version will have clearer navigation and informative guidance, making it easier for GMs, old and new alike, to weave together and run this definitive campaign.
The company says it will release the campaign will coincide with Fantasy Flight’s release of the expansion in the first quarter of 2018.
In a press release, Call of Cthulhu line editor Mike Mason said he was looking forward to the crossover, adding: “The campaign is a classic of role playing – its transformation into a board game is likely to become a classic too!”
