‘Eccentric and frightening’ – Gary Gygax’s FBI file released
Criminal justice reporter CJ Ciaramella has used a freedom of information request to take a look at the FBI files on Dungeons & Dragons creator Gary Gygax, revealing that the agency considered him to be “eccentric and frightening.”
Ciaramella posted the full report on Gygax and TSR – the company that originally published D&D – on the news website Reason.com. It makes for fascinating reading, with details ranging from disputes in the wargaming community over profit margins to Gygax’s own political affiliations.
The report states that Gygax was “known to carry a weapon” and was “proud of his record of personally answering any letter coming from a prison.” It also added that he would be unlikely to cooperate with an FBI investigation, noting that “wargamers are very loyal to one another.”
Though it may seem bizarre that the FBI was keeping tabs on Gygax and his business, it’s worth noting that the report was written in 1995 and at the time the US had seen a spike in anti-government terrorism and militia activity. At the time the wargaming and roleplaying community in the country tended to favour libertarian politics and Gygax himself was a member of the libertarian party.
