Xanathar’s Guide to Everything promises huge update for D&D 5E
D&D 5E players and dungeon masters will be getting a raft of new class, spell and rules options in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, which will be released later this year.
Where Volo’s Guide to Monsters provided a look at some of the deadliest creatures roaming the caves and forests of D&D, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything turns its eye on the adventurers themselves. The book is set to include tools for Dungeon Masters, such as new traps and treasures, and rules for shared world campaigns and organised play.
The players themselves also get a huge number of new options, with the introduction of more than 25 new subclasses. Lead rules developer Jeremy Crawford has confirmed that each class will be getting at least two or more new subclasses, except for the wizard which only gets one extra option.
He has also said that each of these are finalised versions of concepts already featured in Unearthed Arcana playtest articles, including the cavalier fighter, which focuses on mounted combat, and the plane-shifting horizon walker ranger.
As well as this, the book will feature ‘dozens’ of new feats and spells for players to try out, in addition to options for downtime activities and tables for creating a randomised backstory.
Xanathar’s Guide to Everything looks set to be the biggest update to the 5E ruleset since the game was released, and pulls heavily from ideas and playtest material that has been filtering out for the past two years.
Just as Volo’s Guide to Monsters was presented as the notes of a legendary scholar from D&D’s Forgotten Realms setting, the book itself is framed as the work of the deadly beholder Xanathar, who despite their monstrous origins operates one of the most powerful crime guilds in the city of Waterdeep.
The announcement came as Wizards of the Coast set out their plans for the rest of their 2017 product range, which also includes the Tomb of Annihilation campaign and an official battle map.
Xanathar’s Guide to Everything is scheduled to be released on 21 November, 2017.
